The chat unlock process was designed to promote more authentic and spontaneous responses. Users were allowed to start their recording process only once, with a 15-minute time limit, and they could only view their match’s Stroll Question after they started their attempt. The combination of these features aimed to encourage spontaneous responses and discourage excessive re-recording that could lead to responses sounding unnatural.
However, implementing numerous micro-rules within the chat unlock process presented challenges for users, creating a sense of stress and immediacy. Users expressed difficulty in thinking of an immediate response and preferred the ability to view their match’s Stroll Question in advance, allowing them to ponder over their answer and send it at their convenience. The unintended behaviour of the time limit and single attempt recording resulting in stress, also ironically led to procrastination of responses, as users wanted to wait till they feel more ready.
I iterated on the chat unlock flow by simplifying the process and removing unnecessary screens containing instructions, keeping it visually clean and straightforward. We eliminated the time limit and single attempt restriction, allowing users to enter and leave the recording flow as desired within the 3-day validity period for unlocked chats. The Stroll Question is now shown before starting recording, giving users time to think about their answers. These changes aim to create a seamless and stress-free user experience.
Through this iteration, we gained key learnings about the importance of having a deep understanding of the user base and their cultural norms. In the Asian context, where users tend to be more conservative and shy about public expression, we realised that slight tweaks in the product features can have a significant impact on user behaviour. These insights reinforced the value of deep empathy in creating a more inclusive user experience.
